Chinese fire drill meaning12/30/2023 A second critique is that modern culture is boring - the drones aren't so much obeying as following the excitement. The idea is that if you push the Authority Button on the drones, they'll do whatever you tell them, no matter how absurd. When characters fall for this, it's commonly used to criticize modern culture as overly sheeplike and/or show the main character as cool, intelligent, and rebellious. It must also be noted that success hinges on how trusting the people you are trying to convince are people from countries where crime is widespread are much less susceptible to this kind of scheme since they already have to deal with various types of scams. Of course one could bolster their ruse with props, cover story, etc., but at that point we are leaving the bounds of this trope and getting into a standard disguise infiltration. The most common dissenters are rebellious types and conspiracy theorists who distrust authority as matter of course, as well as children or other people who are Too Dumb to Fool, lack the social conditioning to defer to authority, and don't understand why the loud man is being so mean and bossy. Even one dissenter, if not immediately silenced/placated, can set off a chain reaction that causes everyone to realize you're a fraud. In order for a Bavarian Fire Drill to work, the person's claim to authority must go completely unchallenged. They enlist others in their Stone Soup or Fence Painting project simply by pretending they're in charge, and everyone else goes with the flow. This is a favorite tactic of High School Hustlers, Phantom Thieves, and MacGyver-like characters. For example, walking into a secure area and acting like you have the right to be there in theory, everyone will believe you. The Bavarian Fire Drill is a Social Engineering tactic where you get what you need done by acting as if you already have the authority to do it.
